I hope that everyone had a great holiday weekend! It's not often that we three alone as a family get to just hang out for the day without anything else going on. We spent the day at the pool and had some good quality family time. (We are definitely paying the price today even though we used generous amounts of sunblock.)
I can't believe May has come and gone!
Please check out the June hostess incentives. There are some great products you can get for FREE if you host a party this coming month!
And since it's the LAST day of MAY, you will receive 20% off ANY order made by the end of the day. Email me to order.

Living with Less
I read this quote and loved it. So I want to share:
"A rallying cry of sustainable living is “live with less.” Less buying, less stuff, less clutter, less cheap junk, less consumerism. When our possessions are limited, so is the time that it takes to care for them. Freedom from “stuff” goes along with an increase in time and energy to give to things that are truly important." -Keeper of the Home
This is so true. I spend most every day trying to find ways for more quality time for myself and with my family instead of cleaning!
As you read, yesterday was my birthday. The only "stuff" I got and will hang on to is a new shirt (which I picked out myself!). As for my husband, he really stepped up and gave me the best gift ever and definitely respected my new goal of "living with less". He gave me a stack of coupons for getting out of things like cooking dinner, dishes, etc. So WONDERFUL!!!!
We are continuing our goal of cleaning out the house and have really started to help my son understand that he needs to respect the things he owns and doesn't need a new toy every time we go to the store (his grandparents have truly spoiled him).
I hope everyone knows that we each have our own struggles and all we can do is work toward bettering ourselves, those around us and helping out the world one small step at a time.Good luck! And as always, share any ideas you have.

Door Mats
While doing some more research, I came across this interesting piece of information.
"Wiping your feet. Equip your exterior doors with a series of mats--or one long "walk-off" mat--so everyone enters with clean shoes. As long as there's room for five steps on the mats, you'll drastically reduce the amount of grime tracked in. That means fewer pathogens that cause disease and less chemical cleanup. It will also mean improved indoor air quality, since dirt embedded in a carpet can become airborne when it's tromped on or agitated by a vacuum."
This is something worth knowing. We have a good size rug at the front door so hopefully we are getting some of the grime off of shoes on that way in the house. The great thing about the rug there is that it can go straight into the washing machine.
The problem I have left to fix is the back door. Last week we re-stocked the sandbox. Big mistake. My son was thrilled of course, and I was happy to do something he really wanted. But that was before I realized that half of it would end up in the house. The sliding door in the dining room/kitchen opens right into the back yard, a feature I have loved until now. There isn't enough time for the sand to come off before he comes inside. We need a really good rug to catch it all and help our air!

Operation Declutter
I crave many things in life, chocolate for example, but one thing I have been "craving" might baffle some, just as it does my husband. What is it that I have been craving? Simple Living! Weird? You might say that. Not weird to live simply, but maybe weird to crave it.
I've read and researched many things. I have found numerous ways along the way that interest and excite me. For instance, the woman in New York whose residence is only 90 sq feet. And of course the "tiny houses" (see one example here).
But these are not practical for life with a three-year-old. One little secret I do have is a desire to live in a hotel. Again, some or most might think I'm crazy, but just think of the simplicity of it. There's not a ton of room so you wouldn't have to worry about having too many things because they wouldn't fit. It gets cleaned for you on a regular basis, the closet is small and would keep you from hanging on to items that will never work for you, only a few toys can be kept on hand which helps for easy cleanup, the majority of your "bills" are compiled into one payment and having a pool on-site would be a great joy for myself and my son.
Since this is not likely to ever happen, it's up to me to turn our current living situation into the simplified version I most desire.
Starting today! We are headed to my son's room for another round of toy and clothing decluttering. We moved about six-months ago and purged many broken and unused toys. Most people that write how-to's on organization suggest you go through your things every six months. So we are right on schedule. There's more broken toys (he is three and a very rowdy boy) and another season has passed us by so warm clothes need stored away for further use or donated.
How can this be green?
-Donating your items can give someone else the chance to purchase them instead of buying new items.
-Being organized will help you know where things are so when they are needed, you won't end up running out to buy more.
-After cleaning out toys, clothes, books, even kitchen supplies, it will help you think twice the next time you are faced with an impulse to buy something if you just donated similar items.
-It will help you have a more peaceful harmony in your home.

Thermostat check
In our married life, we have always been the type of people to have the air conditioning turned very low. We like the house cold since life in the South can be very hot and sweaty. When I was in high school, we moved from a very mild climate out West to North Carolina. During the summer. I don't know how I survived. When I would go to friends houses, we had to play outside. Their parents wouldn't allow the kids in and out to waste the cooled air. One of my favorite movie lines is from Sweet Home Alabama. Fred Ward's character ushers everyone inside his house saying "Let's not let out all of the bought air." Ha! Classic.
Since the temperatures have again begun to rise, we have done much better with using other resources to cool our house and not have the thermostat turned so low. On cool nights we open windows and use fans in every room to help circulate the air. This week has especially been helpful since it's been so chilly outside that we haven't even thought of having the air conditioning going.
Stay cool this summer, but look for ways to use less power in doing so!

How Technology Helps
Technology is so great. It really helps us use less. Mostly less paper.
My husband was recently given an iPad. He found a great free app for tracing letters and numbers. I have already purchased numerous workbooks for him, but this is so helpful and I'm sure will help me use less paper from printing off more things for him to write. Usually we do about one letter per day, but yesterday in about five minutes he went through half of the alphabet identifying and tracing them. I was so excited!
What a wonderful way to learn and waste less!

Running errands
Errands. Such a dirty word. But it's something we all have to do. Grocery shopping, car pool, kids events, post office, drug store... I could go on and on about the amount of errands I have on any given week. I have now decided to be smart about it. Here are a few of my ideas. If you have some, please share!
1. Map out where you are going. Write it down or just think about all the different places you need to go during the week and group all the ones together that are in the same part of town. This saves time and gas which helps your sanity and the air we all breathe.
2. Ask yourself if it is really something that you need to do or purchase. Most of the time I end up deciding that I'm better off not even going at all.
3. Take healthy, low-waste snacks for you and the children including water bottles filled from home. That way you won't end up in a drive-thru or grabbing a water bottle while shopping.
4. Schedule it. Most people have some sort of electronic device with them at all times that has a calendar and note pads. Use the calendar for what you are going to do on what day and the note pad to create your shopping lists. Think of all the paper you will save on printing calendars and endless shopping lists. There are a lot of Apps out there that can even help you out.

I love Celadon Road's glass cleaner. Our mirrors always need to be cleaned. My son Josh is a very enthusiastic hand washer and leaves the evidence all over the mirrors...in every bathroom. I love this cleaner because it actually works, smells great and best of all I can let Josh go crazy with "helping" me clean the glass doors and windows and not have to worry about what he might be inhaling or ingesting with each spray.
Try one for yourself for FREE with any $25 purchase or more (not including shipping and tax). Today only! Email me to order.

Taking your lunch
My husband has been doing a great job of taking his lunch four out of the five days a week to work. He previously ate out almost every day. Not only is it healthier and cheaper, but tremendously saves on waste. I pack his sandwich and goodies in tupperware containers. (Since I already own these, it wouldn't be very wise to just throw them away but when they aren't useable anymore, I'll opt for stainless steel.) He needs the hard containers because he packs it all in his backpack and it needs to survive the bus ride all the way to his office.
For those of us that take a lunch on the go that doesn't require extra protection, these options are so great. I have the sandwich wrap and it just wipes clean!
Today only, I'm offering 10% off the purchase of any lunch accessory in honor of my husband's great accomplishment!

Turning off the lights
As much as I hate to admit it, I'm a big scaredy cat. Even though I've always slept with my room dark, I like to leave various lights on in the house. It got really bad when I had Josh. He wasn't a good sleeper so I would leave lights on so I didn't have to worry about it being too dark for me to see when I would have to get him in the middle of the night for bottles, etc.
I have been doing much better lately with making sure the lights are off. Most of the time the only ones left on during the night are the porch light and Josh's night light. (I'm still too paranoid to turn off the porch light. Safety first!)
We have made a goal to turn everything off when not in the room, including fans and lights. This is a great way to conserve energy and save money!

Party plates
It's at that time of year again when we start heading outdoors for camping, bbqs and other gatherings that involve eating.
The easiest thing to do is to run out and grab a stack of paper plates for your guests. This isn't the "greenest" solution. I have a stack of nice glass plates that I purchased years ago at a dollar store. They have saved me countless dollars over the years by not having to buy paper plates every time we had more than four guests over to eat. They work great for parties, showers, etc. and go right back in the cabinet for easy access.
Although reusable plates are the best option, sometimes they are just not practical. As much as I love to save money and avoid fill the dump with more paper plates, taking a stack of glass plates on a camping trip just isn't an option. That's why so many suppliers are now seeing the demand for products people can feel good about purchasing that won't do more harm to the environment. There are now numerous options of "eco-disposable" plates out there that you can purchase for camping or extra large gatherings outdoors!
I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day, I know I did. And have fun with all the parties this summer and remember to plan ahead to avoid unnecessary waste!

Green gift wrapping
As Mother's Day approaches and I have gifts to wrap, I again wonder what the best things are to use. Luckily I have always been a hoarder of gift bags. I still have a few left from our wedding, which was over six years ago. As much as I admire a well-wrapped package, there is nothing easier then tossing a gift in a bag. Yay for another easy, eco-friendly, and cheap fix!
Here are some ideas that I found interesting enough to do myself:
1. Re-using gift bags
2. Furoshiki (like origami with fabric)
3. Home-made fabric gift bags
4. Paper tape or no tape
5. Using odd boxes like cereal, etc.
6. Plain brown lunch bags with wire ribbon
7. Eco-friendly new gift bags (for when you run out!)

Buying used goods
When I was younger, my mom occasionally shopped at thrift stores, but frequented yard sales. From what I recall, she purchased any number of used items for herself and the house, but not really for us kids. She was definitely a mom that wanted to do and buy the best things for us, even on small budget.
Learning on your own is a completely different story. I don't think I really learned what great used clothing was out there for sale until I was in my Sophomore year of college. A friend of mine worked at a local consignment store and was able to get me a job there as well. At the time I was just excited to get a job, but it is an experience I will never forget. Not just for the wonderful people I grew to love, but how easy it is to find like-new clothes at a fraction of the price. After working there for a year, on any given day my underwear and socks might be the only new items I was wearing!
Ever since my son was born, I rarely buy him new clothing. In our city there was this wonderful consignment sale twice a year that I would stock up on everything he might need for that season or even the next. And I found a wonderfully stocked and well priced Good Will not far from us that I would frequent for anything from a new couch to Christmas presents.
All of these reasons stemmed from a need or desire to spend less. Now as I do more and more research on ways I can help out the environment, one of the main things emphasized is buying used goods because the energy needed to produce these goods has already passed and purchasing them does not create a demand for more items to be produced. (REUSE!!!!!) I can now pat myself on the back for another great reason to shop at the Good Will, consignment shops, craigslist, thredup, etc.! There are so many wonderful outlets out there to find like-new items at a fraction of the cost and leave fraction of the carbon footprint by doing so.

To-go cups
Here is a real challenge for us. I do not have a very good memory, but I try to keep things in my purse so I won't have to think about it every time we leave the house. Josh's great-grandma bought him a cute little stainless-steel water bottle with his name on it. It doesn't leak so I keep in it my purse most of the time. He loves water and is always thirsty. I have on occasion forgotten it and unfortunately had to purchase a plastic bottle of water. (At least the last time it happened I bought a Dasani packed in recycled material!)
Yesterday we went out to a local jump zone/play area. They don't let you bring in outside drinks and food but they guy was nice enough to let me bring in Josh's water bottle and fill it up with water. Go me! Otherwise they have styrofoam cups :( And today we are headed out to play group at the park so I have to make sure it's washed and ready for another outing!
Now, I love an occasional splurge on a fountain diet coke. So I need to find the best re-usable solution for fountain soda. I have many water bottles and to-go cups so I'm all set there!
In honor of this post, I'm offering 10% off any to-go cup or water bottle purchase, today only. You must email me to order with the discount.
Or get this pink bottle FREE if you sign up today to host a party and have 8 or more guests attend.

Recycling
When I first thought about trying to recycle, it gave me a minor panic attack... How do you separate everything that gets recycled? What all can be recycled? How much will it cost to have my recycling picked up? How much would it cost to purchase all the separate bins? Where would I put them all? Where can I find somewhere to take it? Would my son mess it all up by dumping food or other garbage on top? Plus a few others.
In our old neighborhood in Alabama, quite a few houses on our street had a separate trash can for their recycling and it was picked up on a separate day than the regular trash. I thought it must take quite a dedication and time commitment to get serious about recycling. Well, I was wrong. It is so easy! All it took was a few calm moments of research to figure it all out. Here are a few things I've discovered:
1. You can put it all together! No separate bins needed! Whew....that was a biggy.
2. What can be recycled? Lots of things, but some places have different items they will or won't take. Clean paper (no food remnants or grease and it needs to be and stay dry), glass jars rinsed and dried, aluminum cans (soda, tomato sauce, etc) again, rinsed and dried, cardboard (think cereal boxes, etc), dry plastic bottles (our place only takes #1 and #2 - # located on the bottom of the bottle) and newspapers. There are more items of course, but these are the easy ones that are thrown away on a daily basis at our house.
3. Where to put it all? I was excited that I remembered a barely used trash can in our garage. I washed it out and it fit perfectly next to our current trash can. So just use something you already have! Improvise if necessary or find something at a thrift store.
4. What to do with it? There are many cities that offer curb-side pick up, but it costs money. If you can pay for it, it's an easy way to help out the environment. If you don't want to pay extra or if you city doesn't offer it, there are many locations that accept drop offs. If you are already going out for errands, why not make one more stop to drop off your recycling? Some cities even offer cash rewards for some items.
5. What about my son? That was so easy. I just explained that it was a special trash can for things we are going to "recycle"to help outside stay clean.
If I can do it, you can do it! Please feel free to comment with any ideas you have!

Getting the news
Since everyone is glued to the news right now, or were last night... I started thinking about how we get our news.
Sometimes it's a hard line to cross for me b/w being eco-friendly and getting the best deal. I am a bargain hunter. Not the best, but I try hard. My husband thrives on having his weekend newspaper. We have a subscription for Friday, Saturday and Sunday b/c we were offered a tremendous deal. It was cheaper than just getting the Sunday paper. Plus I get an extra one for coupons on Sunday.
I know I should move down to Sunday only since that's mainly what we read, but I don't know if that can happen yet. We can get the news for "free" in so many places electronically leaving a much smaller impact on the environment. All I can say in my defense is that at least we have started to recycle them! And maybe I can move to Sundays only when our subscription finally runs out.

Journaling
Today is a special day for us in the Atlanta area. The Atlanta Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is being dedicated by President Thomas S. Monson and re-opened to the members of the church.
In our church, we are encouraged to journal everything, important and seemingly ordinary events. This is a great day to be journaling. I wish my mom had written in journals so that I could read about her life and learn from her. I need to make a better effort for my son.
Celadon Road has many great choices of journals. In honor of today I'm offering 10% off any journal purchase. Email me to order.
Here is one example:
Leaf Imprint Journals - green leaf
