While doing some more research, I came across this interesting piece of information.
"Wiping your feet. Equip your exterior doors with a series of mats--or one long "walk-off" mat--so everyone enters with clean shoes. As long as there's room for five steps on the mats, you'll drastically reduce the amount of grime tracked in. That means fewer pathogens that cause disease and less chemical cleanup. It will also mean improved indoor air quality, since dirt embedded in a carpet can become airborne when it's tromped on or agitated by a vacuum."
This is something worth knowing. We have a good size rug at the front door so hopefully we are getting some of the grime off of shoes on that way in the house. The great thing about the rug there is that it can go straight into the washing machine.
The problem I have left to fix is the back door. Last week we re-stocked the sandbox. Big mistake. My son was thrilled of course, and I was happy to do something he really wanted. But that was before I realized that half of it would end up in the house. The sliding door in the dining room/kitchen opens right into the back yard, a feature I have loved until now. There isn't enough time for the sand to come off before he comes inside. We need a really good rug to catch it all and help our air!
